Your degree: worth the paper it’s written on?

Written by Jo

I’ve been working on budgets for the new financial year over the past few days and - though I will always find numbers harder than words to deal with - I get some satisfaction from making them add up…even if my spreadsheets do need a thorough check from our financial controller. My degree in French and Management Studies, which included an accounting module, comes in rather handy for such tasks. Nonetheless, I’ve certainly learnt more about the intricacies of a P&L since joining Berkeley PR.

As we approach the exam season, many students will soon be anxiously waiting for their GCSE and A-level results and looking at their options in terms of continuing their studies or going into work. Those looking for a career in PR might be considering a PR degree or something more traditional - and wondering which will be best suited to life in a busy consultancy.

Over the past couple of years, we’ve taken on people with degrees in PR, media, marketing, business and English literature. Contrary to reports that degrees are being dumbed down every year, I’m impressed by the calibre of our graduate trainees. Each one of them brings their own set of skills to our business - but they would be the first to admit that they have a huge amount to learn “on the job” too.

We’re always interested in talking to people with a genuine interest in PR and a hunger to learn. Check out the vacancies on our recruitment page if you’d like to talk back.

Now…back to my budget.
