Time to give up on spelling?

Written by Jo

A Bucks New University lecturer thinks so. He’s so sick of correcting the same spelling errors - such as arguement, ignor, occured, opertunity, que, speach, thier, truely and twelth - that he’s launching a crusade for the most common “variant spellings” to be fully accepted into common usage. At the risk of sounding like my Mum, what hope is there for the journalists and PR consultants of the future if their teachers can’t be bothered to help them learn to spell properly?

Absolutely rediculous. Next they will be campaigning to allow essays to be completed in SMS speak. Can you imagine articulating complex theories about the breakdown of society through smiley faces and vowel free language?! I’m with you all the way on this one: a lack of effective education is no reason to change the grammatical rules of a language. It’s ignoring the problem completely.

It’s never held you back, Dan.
