Sifting for gold

Written by Becca

Last night I was absolutely enthralled by the new BBC series Britain from Above. It was fascinating to look at our towns, cities and countryside from the sky, rather than from our normal viewpoint.

This got me thinking - what are we missing simply because we’re so used to the view? By looking from above, or perhaps below, or sideways or backwards, might we start to find hidden gems that we forget to look for because we’ve developed tunnelled vision?

I’ve often thought this to be the case for a multitude of news announcements. I’m certain that potentially groundbreaking stories are often not picked up because the real news value is lost half way down the release which, quite frankly, a busy journalist won’t get to unless you grab their attention from the start. If your “gold” isn’t in the headline, the opening line, or at very least the first paragraph, your incredible announcement might never make it into print.

Does your company “blurb” really need to take up ninety per cent of the first paragraph and are you be losing out on valuable coverage because your gem of a story is lost half way down the page? Perhaps, just for today, look at things “from above” and see if you can identify whether you’ve actually got something pretty damn great to shout about.
