Dangerous talk

Further to reading Jo’s enlightening post on the latest social network phenomenon that is Twitter, an article on my BBC Technology RSS feed caught my attention.
The article was contesting that Twitter might be used to promote terrorism in the not so distant future as “Terrorists could theoretically use Twitter social networking in the US as an operational tool.”
The difficulty is, if we’re all for freedom of speech, bringing people together and sharing ideas, how do you restrict people to idle banter? Just yesterday I found a rather lovely technology freelancer who posts her requests on Twitter and this has already resulted in an interview for The Times.
So, I’m definitely hoping that Twitter doesn’t get shut down for “encouraging” terrorism and is allowed to do what it does best. I’ll certainly be keeping my eye on my contacts’ tweets for as long as I’m allowed.
